Western wildfires grow amid heat wave, increasing drought


A stubborn, days-long heatwave, coupled with little precipitation, has led to an uptick in wildfire activity across the West, particularly in Alaska, California and Oregon, with at least 68 large wildfires burning on 700,000 acres, which, surprisingly enough, is below average for this time of year, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.
